7" STORYTELLERS: SHOWERS WITHOUT WARNING

"Showers Without Warning" is a tune I originally wrote for our Friday the 13th-Themed group, The Happy Campers in 3D. Then, as the batch of songs that are making up our new album came together, we realized this tune could fit just as snuggly into the Hi Ho Silver Oh family.

Alice Hardy is the heroine of the first Friday the 13th movie. She survives a big twist, and *SPOILER ALERT* cuts off Jason Voorhees' mom's head. That was supposed to be the end of that story, but since the low-budget movie did so well, the studio decided to keep it going and going. For some reason, the second movie starts with Alice living by herself in a scarily drafty apartment. She talks to her (rightfully) worried mom on the phone, and let's her know she's doing fine. Why, after watching all your exciting new summer friends get murdered with farming equipment, would you move out of your parents' house into your own place? The song supposes it was because Alice was ready to die.

Sprinkled onto every song are my own worries about life and death. Horror movies are a nice place to see those worries played out. In fact, I'm at the perfect age for a horror-movie scenario to strike me and my fun group of friends down on any given camping trip, so I guess I've got a fresh sympathy for Alice and her buds.

7 INCHES OF RECORD

We received the first shipment of our first 7" record one month ago. We had been getting pumped about it for a good while. We worked with Trailer Fire records on the logistics of making it real, and with our friend Roxy on the artwork and layout. Sadly, when we opened up the package of the supposedly brand new records, we found that: (1) the dust jackets ordered didn't come (2) almost every record was smudged or scratched in a similar spot. What a bummer!

Now we're back with some new, improved, and unblemished clear vinyl 7" records. They're special edition for the first 50 real-life buyers at shows and in stores, and for the first 50 internet orders. If you bought one of the few undamaged records from the first batch, we'll gladly hook you up with a clear one. Just send us an e-mail over at hihosilveroh@gmail.com, and we'll make some arrangements.

Order a copy online on the Trailer Fire Records website, grab one at a show, or check out your favorite LA vinyl shop. Check back this week to stream the tracks and test 'em on your ears before you hold 'em in your hands.

HAPPY CAMPERS SHOW SATURDAY

Our Friday the 13th themed band will be playing a show this Saturday in the back of Stories Bookstore in Echo Park. Tommy Santee Klaws will also be playing. This show is last of the "Spinning Yarn" series, which occupied every October Saturday this year. It'll also be a gear-up for a Murder Ballads show at the Echoplex on October 26th! Thanks to the New Los Angeles Folk Festival folks for putting on great stuff, and for letting us be a part.

Keep an eye peeled for new Happy Campers songs. It is the season for things that seem vaguely scary...oooooohhhhhhhhhh

My Confessor - House Show Style

"Sneaky" Pete Ohs directed this clandestine performance of "My Confessor" we debuted at a house show at our place back in April. We threw an impromptu "festival" where different artists played in various rooms in and around the house (we used the front porch too!). The culmination: Hi Ho Silver Oh and Daniel Hart doing an omnichord/acoustic performance!

West Coast Tour Starts Today!

Come one! Come all! Hi Ho is leaving this afternoon to embark upon our first West Coast tour. Months of planning, evenings of meticulous pie charts, x & y graphs, and corn whiskey have led to this undertaking. We are prepared. We have a minivan.

We don't know anything that is going to happen in the next two weeks, except that we are playing concerts almost every evening. That's a surefire truth.

We'll be sure to keep y'all updated through this blog thing as the days pass!

Hard Ticket to Hawaii

Tonight, after YEARS of waiting, Hard Ticket to Hawaii arrived from Netflix. There's little to explain about this movie, except that the writer/director originally worked on the "Wide World of Sports" and invented "the honey shot" (google that one and you'll get a foreshadowing of what this film includes). This film is one of twelve from the "Triple B" Collection--the three b's being "bullets, bombs and babes."

Needless to say, based on the clip below, you'll come to learn our night was made complete by the watching of this flick. Oh, and on top of the fact that there's a razorblade frisbee, there's also a mutant snake.

Integratron Desert Fun

Yesterday Jon, Wil, Casey and I embarked on a road trip to the Palm Springs region of California, in preparation for a late night slot at Pioneertown's Pappy & Harriet's. It was wild time, getting a sound bath at George Van Tassel's Integratron with reverberating quartz crystal therapy in an acoustically perfect dome, exploring Noah Purifoy's outdoor art installation made entirely of wreckage items, and finding the dopest (and cheapest) thrift store in a random nook of the region.

As we filtered through the dusty racks, the elderly cashiers complimented our tastes in purchasing a jacket with a "Golden Creme" insignia, and an undersized gray sweatshirt with kittens on it. Hell, they even gave us Valentine's lollipops reserved for "handsome looking gentleman" which we politely obliged and ate. Thanks ladies.

Asking them why there was 70's rock music pulsing through the adjacent walls, they casually remarked that Narcotics Anonymous was having a Valentine's dance, which--upon viewing the crowd outside--it became clear they were more interested in hackey sack than cutting a rug on the Rec Center floor. "Oh, but come back soon," the old women remarked, counting our change repeatedly. "We're having a bake sale in a week. The ol' IRS really is making sure we count our dollars now!"

Oh, and Pappy and H's has some awesome folks working there. Killer sound system, and a super warm crowd environment. Plus, there's a bowling alley next door built by Roy Rogers. Saturday was a total win.

We at Hi Ho Silver Oh are super excited about an upcoming show (as well as our good friend Jody over at When You Awake blog). Leslie & the Badgers and Lissie are going to be playing a killer double lineup at Santa Barbara's Muddy Waters on February 14th (Valentine's Day). Both are bands fronted by some exceptionally talented ladies with heartbreakingly powerful voices, and crews of multi-talented musicians bringing musical thunder at every gig.

Tickets are still onsale, available HERE! We'll be at the show, so come hang with us and we'll have a chat and a beer and enjoy the Santa Barbara streets on a romantic evenin'.

Este Rocks at the Echo!

Yo! Este Haim, our bassist extroardinare, plays in a bad-ass band with her two sisters Alana and Danielle, and they are called HAIM. They are playing the Echo tomorrow night (Tuesday) with Olin and the Moon and Henry Clay People. These are brutally talented bands.

Gone Straight From My Head

We're all super proud of our friends out here in LA--they are such creative, kind-hearted kids--and so when we get to collaborate on projects together, the fun level increases tenfold.

Recently, our bud DC Pierson of the Derrick Comedy Team wrote a novel "The Boy Who Couldn't Sleep and Never Had To" and asked Casey to make up a song inspired by the book.

The resulting track, "Gone Straight from My Head" was posted today as part of a free online mixtape based around the book. Download it here! Woot!

Havin' a Party with Golden Oldies Pete

Last night at our show at L'KEG we opened with an a cappella rendition of Sam Cooke's "Havin' a Party"--a truly classic song, by an unbelievably gifted artist.

Golden Oldies Pete, as he is known in the internet world, is far less renowned than Mr. Cooke, but he does possess what our departed Sammy did not: a Youtube account. Although I did laugh quite heartily when I first saw this video (it's the first page that pops up when you search query for "Havin' a Party"), something about Pete kind of grew on me. A man this dedicated to the craft of karaoke renditions, unafraid to be completely off key--with no ambitions to "make it" that I am aware of--kind of has to be respected for his commitment to singing music that's pretty much been phased out of modern radio waves.

And hell, the dude even writes his own songs. Check out "Sexy Server" if you want to get close to Pete and his "golden oldies" (innuendo-y).

Just finished recording a new song as part of a mix DC Pierson is putting together for his new book The Boy Who Couldn't Sleep And Never Had To. It's such a great book by a really wonderful person. DC is one of the members of the great Derrick Comedy team. Good folks!

In a related name, CC Pierce put out a great video on The Outside Joke 2 page. CC is one of the funniest people I know, and if you haven't seen any of The Outside Joke's videos, you're not as happy as you could be. Go now!

Music We Like: Paddle Boat

What a fantastic live show from this San Diego threesome. This past week we followed their headlining gig at Synchronicity Space in Los Feliz, and they were simply stellar. Backstage, they were humble, sincere, and genuinely nice dudes. We could all sense they were connected musical spirits, in tune with one another on and off stage, and their welcoming nature for us to visit them down in San Diego was more than flattering.

Give their tunes a proper listen. Buy their record. Definitely more than worth your while.

THE ROOM

Tonight we watched "The Room" by Tommy Wisseau. If you're unfamiliar, the film is--almost unarguably--the worst piece of garbage released in recent times. It is so terrible, so god-awful in terms of acting and writing, that it somehow transcends it's abysmal nature and skyrockets into a realm of comedic gold. I mean, who can beat dialogue (written by a European--Wisseau, the writer/director/lead actor--who refuses to disclose his country of origin) like, "Take that attitude and put it in your pocket!" or "I wish you would fall off the face of the planet. That's a promise."

Rumour has it the film was funded by Wisseau's business of selling counterfeit jeans to Korean marketplaces. Couple that with the greenscreening of rooftop scenes to look like San Francisco exteriors (due to the inability to procure proper permits), and you will be a convert.

There is so much more to this film, which apparently screens monthly at the Laemmle to riotious crowds that know the movie by heart. Watch the trailer and then RENT or BUY this movie TODAY. It will be the best decision you made, today.
